Fixing Hubspot’s broken Shopify link to Companies

TL:DR Hubspot broke the link between Companies and Shopify orders – here’s how to get it back

After rolling out an update to a Shopify integration to Hubspot, I was surprised (as apparently many were) to see that Shopify orders were now sitting in a new entity called Orders and not Deals any more, which lost the ability to relate to companies

After several polite but ultimately unhelpful conversations with Hubspot support, I managed to find the answer on my own.

If you need to solve this problem too, here’s what you’ll need to know

  • How to create synced properties
  • How to create a workflow

In essence what you’re going to do is create a workflow that creates Deals and then populates the primary Company association.

Step 1: Sync company to order:
Create a synced property that pulls the primary company ID number from the Order Contact to the Order. This is probably safest as a single line text field.

Step 2: Create a “Company ID” field in Deals as a single line text field. Don’t do anything else with it.

Step 3: Create a worflow that automatically creates a Deal on the order Contact, and pulls the Company ID from the field created in step 1 into the “Company ID” field created on deals in Step 2. Make sure to pull through the Total value from the order through to the deal in this workflow.

Step 4: Use another worflow to automatically create an association on new deals in the ecommerce pipeline (or however you want to classify your Shopify deals), using the Company ID field to match with the Company ID of the company and creating a primary association.

And that’s it!

This will give you basic reporting back of orders and value by Company. I didn’t delve into line items, but that association could probably be made through an order to deal workflow too.

The good thing is that then your Orders, Companies, Contacts and Deals will all be connected. The downside is that technically you’re logging orders twice on contacts so just be mindful of reporting filters, but that’s easily avoided.
